Rain Water Harvesting

Dear Residents of Lingabudhi neighborhood,

Lake is earth’s eye, Barometer of the health of our future too.

Lake Lingambudhi with 75 Ha water spread having about 45 square Km catchment area was an environmental and cultural contribution of the Mysore Royal family in 1828. The lake is indeed a jewel of the city of Mysore. The lake which has been a source of sustenance for the past 150 years to Mysoreans in the area of agriculture, fisheries and other household activities has now become a polluted ditch collecting sewage from various domestic and industries. In the recent past the very existence of the lake was threatened by converting a portion of it as ring road. Thanks to the environmental awareness of the people that project was given up and the lake was saved.

In 1992, sixty nine suggestions for the Mysore enviornment protection were given by thirty seven professionals of the city under the patronage of Mysore Heritage Trust to MUDA. The situation would not have been so bad if the administrator’s had taken those suggestions seriously while planning the protection of lakes and tanks. Time has come when the citizens of Mysore have to wake up to protect the purity and sanctity of the lakes as sources of both clean environment and cultural activity in the district. Dhvanyaloka, Mysore Environment Trust and various social service organizations as well as departments of forest with the support of local organizations have constituted a Citizen Monitoring Committee for protection of Lingambudhi Lake. Citizen Agenda for Lakes in the district has been drafted.

The immediate priority is to protect the land around the lake, by suitable fencing, by preventing contamination of water and to make it fit not only for birds but humans too. Also, to make the lake the nucleus of cultural and social activities to bring people together for improved quality of life. In this context a Citizen’s Lake Protection Fund has also been envisaged.

Your co-operation and sincere participation in Lingambudhi Lake preservation is requested.
